The Pale to Release ’21 Song Salute’

The Pale‘s ’21 Song Salute’ is an album twenty-one years in the making; made up for previously unreleased and unheard material from six of the bandas ten album recording sessions.

Aa?These songs are the strays, stragglers and forgotten sidekicksa explains lead singer and lyricist Matthew Devereux, a?To qualify for inclusion on this record theAsongs had to be unreleased, underexploited or unused. Really this is less a compilation and more an overview of the bandas unreleased catalogue, cherry picking from material we were almost too shy to release.a

The difficult task of choosing the right songs was a huge task in which the band sought the advice of their fans. Uploading a different song each week on Facebook and Soundcloud, the audience provided feedback to help compiling the best of the forgotten gems.

Aa?Itas an important record for us in that it was put together as a community record by our listeners. Itas nice to reward people who have been listening. I am hoping the record feels communal and that it was extracted out of us, rather than forced on them.a

After chart success with ‘Hereas One We Made Earlier’ and ‘Ripe’, plus massive live show acclaim in the early 1990s, The Pale decided to take things into their own hands and try things their own way; becoming a self-sufficient entity, continuously recording, but releasing sporadically.

Aa?We toured for a number of years under the name of Produkt. For a while we were the house band for an alternative circus. We put records out as fan-club exclusives or due to distribution deals, could only release them available in certain territories. Itas been said that we are one step out of kilter with the music industrya

Returning in the noughties, The Pale released and recorded four more albums as well as recording and shelving an entire album, ‘Delete Me’. The bandas constant writing and recording has meant that very often songs just havenat made the final cut of albums for reasons other than song quality.

‘I think people are surprised at how much music we have produced‘ says Devereux. a?For every album we recorded there were always songs that, for whatever reason didnat quite fit. In a funny way the process of going back has allowed us to appreciate the eclecticism of what we do, but also how the various aspects of our music sit together. We have always had a consistent song-writing approach even though we put different backgrounds on our lyrical foregrounds. What is striking about this release is how well it all gels. In many ways this is the album we have been pushing to make all along.a

’21 Song Salute’ is released on 1969 Records on the 9th of August with a nationwide tour planned for Autumn.
