How to write a great biography by Garrett Wall

One of the first ways to get the interest of other people, especially record labels, booking agents, concert and tour promoters and music journalists, is to have an easily readable and enjoyable artist biography.

Here are some pointers in writing a great biography:

Always let your bio speak in the third person.

Don’t forget the important stuff: Where you’re from, what your album is called, what your first single is going to be, any awards or citations, and how to get in touch with you.

Give your bio a focus. Are you trying to sell an album? Do you want people to come to a show? Do you have a single playing on the radio? Are you simply trying to introduce yourself to the world? Giving your bio a sense of purpose will make it easier to write and make you even more interesting to your audience.

Check your spelling and grammar. Avoid slang!

Before you begin to write your bio, be sure you have "taken an inventory" of your background, accomplishments, goals, and objectives as a musician.

Professionals in the music business are busy individuals, who may deal with dozens of "wanna-be's" every week, so make your bio informative, upbeat, and filled with useful comments, descriptions, quotes, and motivational language that will make them want to listen to your music.

Paragraph One: Start with an introductory sentence that clearly defines the essentials.

Paragraph Two: This section should address the immediate purpose of the Bio. What are you doing at this time? Mention a current activity such as a new CD or release or an upcoming tour.

Parapraph Three & Four: At this point, information on any other band members can be introduced, and background information on the forming of the group, past experience, accomplishments, and recognition issues can be addressed
.

Ending Paragraph:
End the Bio in a efficient way. You can  use a quote from a third party review or summarize the 2nd paragraph information, reminding the reader of current activities.
